Festive Fun Day spreads cheer at Aberdeen Christmas Village

Festive spirit was in the air today at the Aberdeen Christmas Village (Tuesday December 11) as community groups, north-east charities, schools and people with additional needs enjoyed a free event.

Aberdeen Inspired, which delivers the Aberdeen Christmas Village in partnership with Aberdeen City Council and Codona’s, put on the Community Festive Fun Day. Now in its fourth year, the day enables groups to enjoy the attractions on Broad Street and Upperkirkgate in a relaxed atmosphere.

Schools across the city, NESS, Befriend a Child, Children 1st, Alcohol and Drugs Action (ADA), SACRO, Aberdeen Lads Club, Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH), MeToo and Syrian New Scots among others flocked to the winter wonderland. They were treated to a wide array of rides, ice-skating, entertainment from Kidsize, free snacks and a soft drink in The Moose, where a disco took place all day.

Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: “It has been fantastic to see so many different groups come together and enjoy the Community Festive Fun Day at the Aberdeen Christmas Village today. This is an inclusive event that we have been proud to host each year and something we are passionate about doing.

“We received a great response from a wide range of groups and third sector groups across the north-east and we’ve loved seeing everyone getting into the festive spirit with a smile on their face. The village is at the heart of Christmas celebrations this year and the community element to the Festive Fun Day really is what it is all about.”

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Barney Crockett, said: “The Christmas Village is a fantastic focal point for Aberdeen’s festivities and the community fun day is an important date on the calendar. It’s wonderful to see everyone come together to enjoy the village and to see so many having fun and joining the celebrations. It’s a real honour to represent Aberdeen City Council at the event and a pleasure to welcome all those attending.”

The Aberdeen Lads Club have been to each Festive Fun Day since it was first established. Angie Johnston, General Manager of the Aberdeen Lads Club said: “The Aberdeen Lads Club Community Project Children are always extremely excited to attend the Community Festive Fun Day at the Aberdeen Christmas Village. It’s a chance for our youngsters to enjoy the fantastic festive attractions. It is important that our children are able to interact in community events and participate in extracurricular activities that may not be in every family’s financial means and the funded community event makes this possible for our children.”

The Aberdeen Christmas Village is open until Monday 31 December 2018.
